According to Boxwalla,
I am so excited to tell you about the wonderful April Box we have dreamed up. This April we feature the gorgeous brand. Monastery, in a box themed 'When the Muses Sing of Spring'.
This April we are showcasing a gorgeous brand Monastery created by Athena Hewett who has been practicing as an aesthetician for 20 years. She started her own skincare studio in San Francisco in 2011 and introduced her own line alongside to treat her patients/clients. This line eventually became Monastery. She draws a lot of inspiration for her line from her Greek heritage- she spent summers with her mother's family in Greece where her grandparents owned an olive grove and the pressed oil oil was used both in food and in skincare. And her grandmother, an herbalist, would press olives from her grove and mix with various herbs to create tonics to heal the skin. Athena grew up in California and learnt a lot of the practices of pressing local herbs and nuts from her mother as well.
I love how Monastery is informed both Athena's heritage & love of plants and plant potions as well as her extensive training & experience as an esthetician. She still practices in her studio in San Francisco (I can't wait to visit!). Athena formulates with a minimalist philosophy, only including what is absolutely necessary in a formulation, letting each ingredient shine & work its magic. Yet the sensory experience is not minimal but multilayered and transportive.
The box contains the Monastery Aloe Hyaluronic Moisture Boost ($79) and the Monastery XX Rose Glycolic Gel ($74). Both are full-sized and the retail value is $153.
Monastery XX Rose Glycolic Gel (Retail Value $74.00 for 2.03 oz.): This delightfully lightweight gel serum, which has the faint aroma of Rose Damascena, gently exfoliates and resurfaces the skin. It leaves skin incredibly soft, smooth, supple, clear and brightened. The 10% Glycolic Acid is tempered by the soothing rose water that helps to hydrate the skin while the Glycolic Acid exfoliates dead skin cells. I use this serum at night, and I kid you not– when I awaken the following morning my skin looks remarkable. My skin is normal with a lightly combination T-Zone, and it can be a little sensitive at times, and yet this exfoliating serum does not irritate my skin, nor does it create uncomfortable tingling or any burning.
Features:
- XX is suitable for all skin types except ultra sensitive. Dermatologist and microbial tested, free of parabens, chemicals and alcohols.
- XX gently resurfaces skin, as glycolic acid and rose water work together to exfoliate, soften, clear, smooth, and brighten.
According to Boxwalla,
XX is an exfoliating serum that can be used overnight a couple times a week. I am conservative when it comes to exfoliation and I use it once a week as an overnight serum. For those with sensitive skin or those who are new to acids, you can first try 1 pump of the product as a kind of 'flash mask', leaving it on for 2-5 mins and rinsing off. Acids don't always work for my skin, but I first used this as a quick mask, before beginning to use it overnight and my skin loved it. The Glycolic acid used in this is derived from sugarcane and papaya and is at 10%. The pH is 5 which is not too acidic and therefore mild.
Directions: Apply 1-2 pumps right after cleansing and before the rest of your skincare regimen. For sensitive skin, apply as a mask for 2-5 minutes and rinse off with water.
Ingredients:
Monastery Aloe Hyaluronic Moisture Boost (Retail Value $79.00 for 2.03 oz.): This gel-based hydrating and nourishing serum is ultra-lightweight and fast absorbing. Its ability to retain and boost hydration is stupendous given that it contains Hyaluronic Acid and Aloe Vera Juice. It leaves skin soft, smooth, supple, hydrated and soothed. Furthermore, it lightly plumps fine lines, and the light lavender aroma soothes the spirit.Features:
- Aloe is suitable for all skin types. Dermatologist and microbial tested, free of parabens, chemicals and alcohols.
- This multipurpose product hydrates and calms skin. It can be used on its own for oily skin types or hot summer days or layered under thicker moisturizers when skin needs more nourishment.
According to Boxwalla
This is a beautiful hydrating gel serum that contains both aloe vera juice and hyaluronic acid, thus providing two sources of hydration. I like to apply on damp (misted) face, and then I layer an oil over it followed by a cream/balm. You can also create a microemulsion with Aloe and an oil and apply it to your skin. This also contains clary sage which tones and reduces inflammation. I loove the scent and can't wait to hear what you think!
Directions: Apply 1-2 pumps to the face, allowing 30 seconds to absorb. For oily skin, use alone as a serum or moisturizer. For dryer skin, apply under any Monastery moisturizer as a hydrating serum.

Overall Assessment: This is my first time trying anything from Monastery, but I am so overjoyed by these two extraordinary products that I plan to further investigate this eco-luxe brand. This is a must-try brand from the most incredible purveyor of eco-luxe beauty boxes.
