If one were to ask me which type of skincare product ranks as my favorite, and most essential, it would seem logical that my answer would be luxury face oils, but in truth my most essential pick is a very effective high SPF sunscreen. Since summer is upon us, the Makeup Wars team is sharing our favorite sunscreens that you will want to know about as the weather heats up. Here are my most-reached for sunscreens for the face that are in my current rotation.
TATCHA Silken Pore Perfecting Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 35 ($65.00 for 2 oz. from TATCHA, Barneys New York and Sephora): This is an ultra luxurious sunscreen that has been touted as a game changer since it hit the market. TATCHA SILKEN Pore Perfecting Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 35 boasts a lightweight and nourishing formula that doubles as a primer to extend the wear of your makeup while protecting your skin.
One seldom speaks in terms of elegance when discussing the anatomy of a sunscreen, but TATCHA has the innate ability to make exceedingly elegant products in even the most seemingly mundane categories such as sunscreens.
TATCHA Silken Pore Perfecting Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 35 is a thick cream housed in a beautiful blue squeeze tube. A light squeeze dispenses the perfect amount of sunscreen without any waste.
The sunscreen itself defies expectations in that its thick texture suggests that it might require a great deal of effort to work into the skin, and that there will invariably be a white residue that will prove to be incompatible with makeup. Yet, TATCHA was able to create the most luxurious silky-smooth sunscreen that melts into the skin as soon as it meets the warmth of the body, and it transforms from an opaque cream into one that is completely invisible. Additionally, there is no greasy residue left to contend with– that so often alters the consistency of your makeup. It neither feels, nor smells like a sunscreen, but instead behaves more like an ultra-luxe nourishing hydrating cream.
Furthermore, in addition to providing broad spectrum SPF 35 protection, it also serves as a remarkably effective makeup primer that diminishes the appearance of enlarged pores.
According to TATCHA,
Inspired by the geisha's iconic makeup, we created this invisible, lightweight sunscreen to perfect and protect skin, making it an elegant, everyday essential.
Provides broad spectrum protection against harmful UVA and UVB rays. Non-greasy formula tightens pores, perfect as a primer for makeup.

Goldfaden MD Sun Visor Ultralight Oil-Free SPF 30 Mist ($45.00 for 2.7 oz. from Goldfaden MD, Nordstrom, Space NK, Bloomingdale's, Net-A-Porter, b-glowing, AHA Beauty, Shen Beauty and Skin Care RX): is a wonderfully effective oil-free, PABA-free and fragrance-free SPF 30 sunscreen mist that offers effective UVA/UVB protection against the harmful rays of the sun. It is not merely a good sunscreen, but it is one of the easiest to use, and it makes reapplication altogether fuss-free. As we are all well aware, sunscreen is only effective for about 2 hours after application and therefore requires frequent reapplication to remain effective. This is where Goldfaden MD Sun Visor really excels because it can easily be carried with you wherever you go, and the refined mist does not disturb your makeup. The fine mist applies the sunscreen evenly and it only takes a moment to blend it in.
Claims:
- Works to help shield skin against harmful rays
- May help aid skin from premature aging
- Oil-free, PABA-free, fragrance-free
- This product does not contain nano particles
Usage Warnings: "For external use only. Do not use in or near the eyes. If contact in eyes occurs, rinse thoroughly with water. Stop use and ask a physician if irritation is severe and keep out of reach of children. Limiting sun exposure, wearing protective clothing, and using a sunscreen agent may reduce the risks of skin aging and other harmful effects of the sun."
According to Goldfaden MD,
Dr. Goldfaden’s fast absorbing, oil-free, PABA-free and fragrance-free SPF 30 sunscreen protects your skin from harmful UVA/UVB rays. This unique product offers dual-action protection by delivering high-level UV filters to help prevent sun damage, fine lines, and dark spots. Skin renewing organic red tea works to rejuvenate skin and provide antioxidant benefits. This advanced, revolutionary, ultralight translucent oil-free, fragrance-free and even smear-free formula is a must for all skin types.
Naturally, it is perfect to use sunscreen during the summer months but we should also be thinking about sun block every day of the year. Best to use at least 2-3 times per day throughout the day regardless of the season. This convenient spray can also be used allover the body and do not forget the back of your hands and your neck and décolleté, as these areas show the first signs of aging and sun damage.

Kerstin Florian Multi-Vitamin Day Creme SPF 30 ($62.00 for 2 oz. from Kerstin Florian, b-glowing, Dermstore, Skin Care RX, Nordstrom and Skin Store): This day cream is richly emollient, seriously moisturizing, and fast absorbing. Furthermore, the antioxidant-rich formula protects the skin while its active botanicals, and other nourishing ingredients, leave skin soft, smooth, supple and luminous. I’m using the MyChelle among others now. I believe I had the Tatcha too and I loved it. Gotta see if I still have some
ReplyDeleteMyChelle makes first rate sunscreens! The TATCHA is definitely one of my all-time favorites!
DeleteYou have some really good picks there! I've been using Volition Beauty's or Colorescience lately and have been happy with both.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Justina. I haven't used either of the sunscreens that you are currently using!
DeleteThose are great picks!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Jen! I am very happy with all of them!
DeleteI like seeing mineral sunscreens that aren't tinted! So many are, as if they have to serve double duty or something.
ReplyDeleteYes, many of the mineral sunscreens to seem to be tinted!
DeleteI favor physical sunscreens more. Nice recommendations. Hawaii will be banning chemical sunscreens soon due to the fact that they aren't reef-safe. Good to know Mychelle has safe ingredients
ReplyDeleteYes, I think that was a very wise move for Hawaii! MyChelle sunscreens are definitely worth using!
DeleteLove your picks. As you know I'm a big fan of the MyChelle and I'm so happy to be using it. The others sound luxurious. Lisa is reviewing the Goldfaden MD but I wish I was the one to have that! LOL
ReplyDeleteThank you, Marcia! MyChelle sunscreens are amazing, and I am so happy that you use and love them as well! The others are quite luxe, and you need to try the Goldfaden MD sunscreen– it's amazing!

ReplyDeleteI am so glad that you have tried all of these, and love them! The TATCHA sunscreen is absolutely amazing– I have normal/combination skin and it works amazing well for me too!
DeleteI didn't even realize that Tatcha made a sunscreen. It sounds tempting, although I tend to prefer lighter textures. But as long as it doesn't leave the skin greasy or with a white veil, that shouldn't be a problem!
ReplyDeleteThe TATCHA sunscreen is amazing. It actually melts into thespian, doubles as a very effective primer, and it is neither greasy, nor does it leave behind an undesirable white veil.
DeleteThe sunscreen mist sounds totally up my alley!
ReplyDeleteThe Goldfaden MD sunscreen mist is AMAZING!!!!!!!! I highly recommend it, and it is so easy to reapply, and it doesn't mess up your makeup.
DeleteI'm so glad you did this post because I'm always looking for good sunscreens, especially for the face and that work well under makeup.

ReplyDeleteThe Goldfaden MD sunscreen mist is AMAZING!
DeleteI love seeing so many sunscreens that not only provide SPF but function as Skin Care and primer, without the white cast. Tatcha would be my ultimate splurge.
ReplyDeleteI agree, completely! These are definitely my current favorites, and the TATCHA sunscreen is definitely a very worthy splurge!
DeleteI live in SW FL and sadly I can not afford many of these products, which I would LOVE to have, so I use whatever is at hand as long as it carries a heavy amount of protection. Currently I am using Bare Minerals that was from a subscription box.
ReplyDeleteThe important thing definitely is to use the high SPF sunscreen that is effective, and that can certainly be found at all price points, and one certainly doesn't have to spend a lot to get a high quality sunscreen!
