Of all of the TOM FORD Beauty products to have been recently released, there is one amazing standout, and that's the Skin Illuminating Duo in Moodlight. It sold out and then resurfaced everywhere, and many are speculating that it will become a permanent part of the core line (though I have not heard this directly from TOM FORD Beauty, myself). All I can say is that everyone who missed out can rejoice in their ability to get their hands on this beautiful duo. It's really that gorgeous!
According to TOM FORD Beauty,
Tom Ford created this highlighting and illuminating powder duo to capture the two most flattering types of natural light on the skin—a soft white shade is like the luminous glow of daylight and a radiant golden shade is like the romantic illusion of candlelight. These lightly shimmering shades can be applied individually or layered together to create a multidimensional glow.
TOM FORD Beauty Skin Illuminating Powder Duo in Moodlight is a stunning highlighting and illuminating powder duo that is ultra finely milled, glides across the skin effortlessly and it neither emphasizes pores, nor does it settle into fine lines. Both powders have a velvety smooth texture that make them both exquisitely satisfying, and easy, to use.
I have been experimenting with the brushes to use with the TOM FORD Beauty Skin Illuminating Powder Duo, and find that I get the best effects with soft and fluffy brushes. A stiffer brush tends to lay down more color than I want and the end result is the more natural glow that I seek.
That the creamy smooth texture facilitates effortless blending is a supreme understatement. In fact, the texture is so enviable that you will find yourself looking for excuses to use these beauties. Both shades offer buildable coverage– should you seek a more obvious glow, but I prefer using a lighter hand to achieve a more natural glow. When built up excessively the finish becomes more metallic and less natural looking.
Furthermore, I noted exceptional wear-time for both powders– in fact both tend to wear all day without a primer on my combination skin, but your experience may differ. If you have particularly oily skin, then the use of a primer will certainly increase the wear-time of these shimmering beauties.
Swatched in midday sun
The swatches on the left are applied heavily, whereas the swatches on the right are applied lightly and blended out.
Note the way that they capture the sunlight.

This FINALLY shipped for me and arrived the other day! I randomly saw it back in stock so I dove on it. So many people were saying that their orders were cancelled. I need to get it photographed so I can use it!
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad that you finally received it! It is so amazing! You will fall in love as soon as you try it, Brooke!
DeleteThis is an amazing duo. The light shade is subtle and is perfect for day as it glows rather than sparkles or shimmers. Applied on the high points, it provides a soft gleam that is quite lovely. The shimmering rose-binge shade is beyond gorgeous in the subdued light typically used in evening venues. The rose-beige shade also works well for me during the day when I use it to enhance the natural pink in my cheeks. It takes the place of blusher and creates a warm, burnished color perfect for autumn. Yes, this beautiful duo is definitely the highlight (pun intended ;-) ) of summer into autumn makeup looks.
ReplyDeleteOn a related topic, I am so over all the extreme contouring and am enjoying the softer spotlight approach.
I completely agree. So far this is the best makeup purchase that I have made this year! Beautiful description, Eileen. This is perfect for the Autumn, but I will be wearing it in the Winter as well!
DeleteThank you for saying that– I have been sick of all of the excessive contouring for a while as well. The spotlight approach is far more natural, and frankly I think that it is much more flattering.
I don't own any Tom Ford- but this looks beautiful! I would try it just for the packaging!

ReplyDeleteHi Mary! Thank you so much for your very kind words, I am thrilled that you love my blog! There is only one color combination for this lovely duo. Somebody inputting the data on the Nordstrom website made a typo. If you purchase it through them you will get this one.

DeleteHi Lola, wonderful review. I recently received this beauty and am experimenting with brushes. I'm finding some success using Charlotte Tilbury's Powder & Sculpt brush. Would you mind sharing what brush(es) you use with the two powders?
ReplyDeleteThank you Tracey! I have been using the Hakuhodo S113 Highlight Brush:
Deletehttp://www.lolassecretbeautyblog.com/2012/03/hakuhodo-s113-highlight-brush-review.html
I have also been using my Hakuhodo Tulip Shaped blush brush (they have several of them in the various collections that they make) for super pigmented blushes since I like a more subtle and luminous effect.
I think that you could also get away with using a small blush brush with super soft bristles as well. :-)
Hi Lola, thanks for the wonderful review. I'm wondering what brush(es) you are using with these powders. I'm finding some success with Charlotte Tilbury's Powder & Sculpt brush. Have also tried Wayne Goss' fan brush however am not satified that I'm using the right brush, especially with the light color. Would appreciate any suggestions.
ReplyDeleteIf you are trying to grab more color with the light shade, something like the Hakuhodo S113 will likely make you happy. I would experiment with more of the brushes that you have to see if you have something that picks up the amount of pigment that you want.
DeleteThanks for the suggestion. Yes, more experimentation is needed. Love this duo. Thanks again!
DeleteYou are so welcome, Tracey! Yes, I would definitely experiment with a few more of your brushes before going out and getting another brush. You also might try using the side of one of your blush brushes, rather than the top, because that can offer a nice and soft sweep of highlighter. It seems as though the WG Fan Brush may offer a more diffused application than you might want. The Hakuhodo S113 has a paint brush or flat paddle foundation brush shaped head, and I find that it does a great job picking up and depositing the highlighter. It really comes down to personal preference, but my guess is that you probably have a brush in your stash that will work really well– even if this is not its intended purpose! :-) Thanks for stopping by!
DeleteI saw that this was available on the Nordstrom website, again and put it off, again and when I went back to order it... On backorder. I have to stop thinking about things and just jump.
ReplyDeleteOh no! I have a feeling that you will get another chance to grab it! It looks as though everyone is restocking. I hope that this means that it is going to be part of the permanent line!
