The Fannie Files | An Update

I have to just take a moment to express my deep appreciation for everyone who has made reading this blog a regular part of their daily lives. This means more to you than you know, and I wanted to take a moment to express my gratitude and joy about this. I know how important your time is, and that you take time to visit, comment and continually forge the bond that we share in our community is deeply meaningful.

This long-winded preamble was precipitated by the fact that I have received a few emails that were only moderately makeup related, but where instead check-ins to see how Fannie was fairing since her renal failure diagnosis (see my initial post from July 26, 2014 here). The selflessness with which one would take the time to send me an email to see how my beloved cat was doing is proof positive that some of the most kind and loving people form the community that we have forged together. For your love, support and kindness, I thank you from the bottom of my heart.
Fannie on her patio chair that my husband topped off with a big cushion to give her added shelter.

It has been nearly 6 months since Fannie's diagnosis, and she is doing remarkably well given that she lives with a mere third of her original kidney function. At 15 years of age she remains energetic, loving, happy, hungry and very affectionate. She essentially has carte blanche– anything that she wants she gets. If she wants to lounge outside, her wish is my command. If she wants several extra meals a day, they are delivered as soon as she asks. If she wants to take up a full third of our bed, and displace us– it is given to her without the slightest objection.

While she will need to go see the vet before long to have the enzyme build-up flushed from her bloodstream, we hope that she will continue to be a happy girl for some time to come. She deserves the happiest life that we could ever provide for her because she is one of the best souls that I have encountered in my time on this earth. Therefore, anything that I can do to make her time here happy and healthy is the very least that I can do for this remarkable kitty.

  5. Fannie is so pretty! I'm glad she is doing well and that you're spoiling her. My 15 year old kitty was diagnosed the same this year in August. She's doing the same as Fannie. I do have a question though. Has her urine production increased ? My Isabella goes so much and seems to always be thirsty. Of course, I let her have as much water as she wants. Thank-you for this update.

    1. Hi Natalie! Fannie is definitely a pretty kitty! She's doing well for now, and I hope that continues for a long time. I'm very sorry to hear that you are going through the same thing! Renal failure is no fun at all. Yes, her urine production has increased greatly, and she drinks an unbelievable amount of water. Sadly, that is a tell tale sign that the kidneys are not doing there job. Fannie has lost 2/3 of her kidney function. The vet kept her overnight, right after the initial diagnosis, and flushed the enzyme buildup from her bloodstream since Fannie's kidneys aren't able to manage it. It's about time to bring her back in to have it done again to keep her as healthy as possible. I think this is the best way to give her as much time as possible, and in the best health possible. I will do anything that I can to prevent her from getting very ill. I hope that your sweet Isabella is feeling well! Did your vet give you the specifics about the percentage of her kidneys that are still functioning? Has it escalated enough that the vet wants to flush the enzymes from her bloodstream? It really helps so much!
