A wonderful longtime reader sent me an email asking whether I had any suggestions for great quality drugstore taupe eyeshadows. Therefore, on my trip to Rite Aid I scoured the makeup aisle to see what I turned up. I came home with two L'Oreal Infallible Eye Shadow Crayons and one Wet n Wild Color Icon Eyeshadow Single. I love crayon eyeshadow sticks and figured that I would try two since Rite-Aid was having a Buy One Get One Half-Off Sale, and the already affordable Wet n Wild Color Icon Eyeshadow Singles were on sale for an additional 40% Off making them about .60 each!
L'Oreal Infallible Eye Shadow Crayons in Impressive Brown No. 702 and Forever Taupe No. 700 and Wet n Wild Color Icon Eyeshadow Single in Nutty.L'Oreal describes their Infallible Eye Shadow Crayon, as an "ultra-intense smudge-proof eye crayon lasts from dawn until dusk and beyond, up to a full 24 hours. The smooth, creamy, long-wearing formula delivers easy-to-wear colour for any occasion. It’s now easy to create endless runway-inspired, colorful eye looks with just one product. Blend multiple colors together or use them individually for a monochromatic look."
They are creamy, ultra pigmented crayons that apply smoothly and evenly without skipping or pulling. This formula is long-wearing, gives you adequate time to blend out before setting, and can be used as a shadow or liner.
Impressive Brown is a rich and beautiful brown, but I selected it because it appeared to be a taupe brown in the closed tube. It wasn't until I got it home and swatches it that I saw that it wasn't so much a taupe brown, but more of a rich and beautiful brown. It has lovely multicolored shimmer that adds depth to the shadow.
Forever Taupe, on the other hand, is indeed a taupe. Any warmth in the underlying base shade is radically cooled down by the cool silvered shimmer. It is a definite stunner.
Nutty is a beautiful warm taupe with shimmer. It is surprisingly creamy, it glides across the skin effortlessly, and is long-wearing. When it does fade, it does so evenly.
According to Wet n Wild their Color Icon Eyeshadow Singles offer, "high-pigmentation and pearl-density" to create a "unique, satiny texture that lasts and lasts." They further assert that this range of eyeshadows is "a versatile collection of classic and trend shades can be easily worn alone or playfully combined for a variety of looks."
Interestingly, when I first swatches Impressive Brown and Forever Taupe they appeared to be remarkably similar, but when I moved my arm about in the natural light each revealed their true character.

The shimmer in all three shadows is subtle enough to be daytime appropriate.

Varied lighting and soft-focus demonstrates the extent to which the Infallible Eye Shadow Crayons twinkle.

I have Nutty and it IS pretty! Definitely curious about those shadow sticks now! I am a big fan of shadow sticks for the convenience (and the lack of brushes that I have to clean afterwards)!
ReplyDeleteHi Sunny! I agree with you! It's hard to believe that it is so wonderful and costs less than $1.00 when it isn't on sale! As a big fan of shadow sticks you should probably try one of these from L'Oreal to see what you think. I suspect that you will prefer Laura Mercier's and By Terry's versions, but these aren't too shabby– especially for a drugstore brand. L'Oreal seems to utilize some of the technologies and quality that they employ in the creation of their luxury brands like Armani to their drugstore variety. They really seem to know how to tighten up the gap between the two! It's really nice not to have to use brushes sometimes! I find that WnW Nutty is creamy enough that I can apply it with my finger! :-)
DeleteIMHO, one of the very best taupe's in both color (a very complex shade with less brown, and more of a purple and mauve undertone) and quality (highly pigmented and incredibly smooth with a fine shimmer), is the middle shade in the Wet 'n Wild trio called Silent Treatment. If it was found in a Tom Ford or Chanel compact you'd never know! It's great for cooler toned skin too.
ReplyDeleteHi Pam, Yes! I don't actually own Silent Treatment, but agree that it contains one gorgeous Taupe! It's good to know that it is as good as it look! Thanks for the excellent description of both color and finish! I will have to grab one next time I am at the drugstore!
DeleteGood luck finding one! The beauty mavens here clean out the display quite regularly! Lol
DeleteNo kidding! LOL!
DeletePretty colors indeed! I like the finish too. They really seem great ones to try out. I wanna see them personally.
ReplyDeleteHi Sue, They definitely are worth looking at in person! It's really amazing how drugstore brands have really stepped up their quality!
DeleteWhat gorgeous finds, Lola! I haven't tried L'Oreal's Infallible line yet but I've heard great things. The shades you chose are stunning. I haven't tried any of the WnW singles, but that one looks so upgraded from the quads I'm familiar with. I hope your subscriber was pleased with your wonderful suggestions :)
ReplyDeleteThanks, Allison! They are quite nice in terms of overall quality, texture and pigmentation. Shopping the drugstore aisles has definitely changed overall since so many of the big companies appear to share the technologies that they employ for their luxury lines. L'Oreal is such a great example as their core line seems to offer affordable finds that often remind one of their Armani line! I don't have any other WnW shadows, but Nutty is definitely worth having. She was quite pleased! :-)
DeleteI love and I mean I love love love taupe colors! And these are some beautiful taupe colors I have to grab these next time I go out!
ReplyDeleteHi Jessica! I am with you about taupes! If I could only collect one shade of eyeshadow it would definitely be taupe! It's so nice to find gorgeous taupes at drugstore prices!
DeleteThose are seriously gorgeous. We are two bloggers with one soul, I swear!
ReplyDeleteThey are, and it's I feel exactly the same way! Can you imagine if we were next door neighbors and could share our stashes?! LOL!
DeleteBeautiful colors! I feel like WnW doesn't get enough credit!
ReplyDeleteI agree with you, Jessica! Their singles shadows really seem to be overshadowed by all of their palettes, and to get a gorgeous taupe for less than a dollar is pretty amazing!
DeleteThese are all gorgeous! I hadn't heard of the L'Oreal pencils, but I'm so going to look for them.
ReplyDeleteI agree! It's definitely worth looking for the display!
DeleteI really like Nutty!
ReplyDeleteMe too!
DeleteWow, those are impressive pigmentation! I mean esp for the price!
ReplyDeleteThat's exactly what I was thinking!
DeleteThese shades are up my alley and the types I would pull for. Love them... and I am going to keep my eyes open for them.
ReplyDeleteHi Honey, Me too! I always gravitate to taupe eyeshadows, and it's really nice to see that you can get beautiful taupes affordably!
DeleteThese shades all look perfect - taupe is my fav' eyeshadow shade :).
ReplyDeleteTaupe is my favorite too! It's really nice to see that you can get some very gorgeous and high quality taupes at the drugstore too!
DeleteThose shadow sticks look so pretty! I love easy makeup, so i'll definitely be on the lookout for these next time I hit CVS!
ReplyDeleteThey really are! It's definitely worth being on the lookout for these! I would also check Rite Aid!
