After having written a post on my Makeup Storage Conundrum, I received an email asking how I was storing my stash of lip products. I therefore thought that I should make a visual response. Here goes....
The drawer itself is part of an original 1920s built-in cabinet in my master bathroom, and it is quite deep and not necessarily terribly efficient. That said, what it lacks in efficient use of space, it makes up for with 1920s architectural charm. I created makeshift dividers with all sorts of repurposed crates, boxes, and the like. My real challenge was how to store a ridiculous number of lip glosses and lip balms so that I could easily see them and access them, and then return them to their proper places after use.
My greatest find was a pile of little plastic baskets that house the lip glosses. I found them for .99 each at Walgreens, and decided that I needed to somehow contain them- so I used an old Melissa & Doug wooden crate that once housed wooden toys. Nine of the little baskets fit perfectly leaving enough space so that I can easily remove the individual baskets to view the contents. The baskets themselves are perforated which is helpful in identifying the lip colors.
The three baskets on the left side (vertically oriented) largely house drugstore lip products. The top is filled with Covergirl Lipslicks and Maybelline Baby Lips (though I did place my three OCC Lip Tars in that basket because there was space for them). The middle and bottom rows are exclusively Revlon Lip Butters.
The center column features mid to high- end lip glosses. The top basket contains MAC Kissable Lipcolours, Lip Gelees, and a few Lipglasses. The center basket is filled with glosses by Rouge Bunny Rouge, Susan Thompson Cosmetics, La Prairie, Bobbi Brown, and Armani. The bottom basket is a mishmash of glosses that includes Lipstick Queen, NARS, and whatever else needed a home.
The right side features yet more glosses!! The top basket is filled with glosses by Anastasia Beverly Hills, LORAC, and a couple of strays. The center basket is all about Chanel-- while it is nearly all Glossimers, it is the Extrait de Gloss that are my most beloved from Chanel. The bottom basket is exclusively Le Métier de Beauté and Burberry. Beneath the bottom basket I managed to squeeze in a little demitasse for lip liners.
The pink zip pouch on the far right is something that I found at Ross for only $2.00!! The moment I saw it, I envisioned using it to store lipsticks upside down so that I could see the labels, and the clear plastic lid makes identifying my lipsticks very easy. Yes, I realize that I have a disproportionate number of lip glosses to lipsticks, but you already knew that I was a lip gloss kind of girl.
Left to Right Compartments: Chanel, Le Métier de Beauté and odds and ends; Burberry; Susan Thompson Cosmetics Creamy Lipsticks and Rouge Bunny Rouge; and finally a huge mishmash of brands.
Beneath the lipsticks I have a rectangular glass container that used to contain a triple wick candle, and the moment I saw it I imagined its use in my makeup drawer. I use it to keep my lip balms easy to find. Below the lip balms on the left is where I keep lip compacts from Chanel, a Susan Thompson Cosmetics Pro Lip Palette, a few Bobbi Brown Lip Glosses, and other odds and ends. The container on the right houses my Le Métier de Beauté Lip Kaleidoscopes, and Le Métier de Beauté Créme Fresh Tints for Lip & Cheek, and a sample lip palette of Chanel Rouge Coco Shines.
In the spirit of full disclosure, I feel morally obligated to tell you that this does not represent all of my lip products! Hangs head in shame while simultaneously and obsessively plotting the next lip product purchase! I have a pile in my desk drawer that I need to photograph and swatch, and piles in my purse, and piles in my travel computer bag-- but you probably already knew that, didn't you?!
How do you store your lip products?
Hey there, what a swooning collection!!! I don't have many lip sticks or lip glosses, more like an eyeshadow junkie and highlighter sucker. So my organization is really simple. 1 cup for glosses and a rectangular basket for lipsticks. The lipstick stash fits my drawer perfectly but the cup is too tall so I throw it on the counter. Those Chanel <3
ReplyDeleteHi Joanne!! Thanks! It frightens me to think that there is a good deal more stashed elsewhere! I really like your organization system! I can only imagine your collection of eyeshadows and highlighters-- I'm quite sure that I would swoon!!!!!!!!! Ah yes, the Chanel-- they really know how to do a mean lip gloss!!!!!!!! <3
Deletefun! i have a clear drawer i store my higher end lipsticks in, but otherwise they're divided by brand (my nars and burberry have their own drawer) or just in the lipstick or lipgloss drawer
ReplyDeleteThat's a great method of storage, Joyce!! What kind of clear drawer do you have? Well, I'm not at all surprised that Burberry has a special zip code in your stash!! NARS too! As my Burberry collection grows *AHEM* I will be forced to make a special "Burberry Home" LOL!
Deleteyou have enough lip products to last a century, lol. i really want to play with them!
ReplyDeleteIsn't it frightening?! What's even scarier is the fact that only a small fraction of them were PR samples!!! They are lonely right now and definitely want to play since I won't touch any of them while I have this cold!!!!!! I won't even touch the cases to say hello :(
DeleteWow!!! I have such a super small stash, and am amazed to see such an arsenal!! I wish I could find more lip colors I like, but I buy and usually end up returning because I hate how they look when I get them home. I'll swatch in the store, but my OCD tendencies don't let me test it out on my lips regardless of the insistence of the SA. LOL!
ReplyDeleteHow do you like the LMdB kaleidoscopes? Is the formula nice? I've always been interested to try one!! And I spy, with my little eye...Rodin!!! Can you believe I'm almost done with my first one! Don't worry...a backup should be arriving today :-)
You have a super small stash because you haven't lost your mind to the extent that I have!! I clearly have gone lippie crazy!!
DeleteI don't think that is OCD at all-- I have actually caught a bug from trying lip and eye testers on my face. It totally grosses me out to think of putting them on my face. I will swatch them on my arm though, and then I wash my arm afterward! So if that qualifies as OCD- then I have it in a big way!
I really love the LMdB Lip Kaleidoscopes, and have my sights set on one more before it disappears! I love the textures of each of the individual pans, and they are non-sticky, moisturizing, and smell a bit like crème brûlée. They are quite lovely-- though I do wish that they weren't $95.00 each! Because of the very high price tag, I would recommend swatching one in store before making the splurge!
Oh yes, you do see our favorite Rodin Olio Lusso Lip Balm- BEST. STUFF. EVER!! I'm so happy that your new one is arriving today. I miss using mine, but I will not put my germy fingers anywhere near my crowned jewel of lip balms!!!
P.S. may we spy into your blush collection someday??? :-)
ReplyDeleteYes, of course my dear friend. I will make it my next "By Request" in what seems to have become a series! :-)
Delete*Grabs the kitty and dances a jig of happiness while said kitty MEOWRRRRRS!*
DeleteYay!
*Grabs the kitty and dances jig of happiness*
DeleteBooBooNinja: "Yay-yay-yay-yay-yay!"
Nikita: "MEOWRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRROWRRRWRWRRRR"
(The above scenario did not occur in real life. It did, however, occur in my imagination.)
LOL!!!!!!!!!!!! ...and I so love your imagination, and your beautiful little Nikita. I want some new pictures! I just got off of the phone with Suzi and told her that you love Mim's the Word & True Love-- she was soooooo happy and touched! It totally made her whole day!
DeleteYou have a lot of lip products! I store mine in the makeup cubes.

Hi Lily! Yes, you might say that I have lost my mind where lip products are concerned!!!!! I love makeup cubes!!! Thanks for stopping by! :D
DeleteVery impressive collection! Those baskets are a great idea.
ReplyDeleteI currently keep my new lip products either in a closet or in a plastic box beside my bed. The ones I'm currently using are either in my makeup bag or on my vanity table.
Hi Iris,
DeleteI'm glad that you like it! The baskets were a great find! It sounds like you have a good system for storing your lip stash! :D
Oh. My. Gawd. That right there is a thing of beauty, I tell ya...pure unadulterated beauty!! :D
ReplyDeleteHi sweetie! If they institutionalize me for irrational lip gloss hoarding- you can come and take all of my glosses, Lip Mists, Lip Covers, and anything else that your heart desires!!!!!!! :D
DeleteJealous!

Hi L, I think it's a case of conspicuous consumption gone awry!!!! Thanks for stopping by! :-)
DeleteOh, I'd love to have a look/swatch at all that you've got there! I'm guessing I'd find a large number that I would deem necessary to add to my own small (at this time) collection as you seem to like a lot of the same brands/colors that I do! Thanks so much for the eye candy!
ReplyDeleteNow that would be one hell of a project!!! :-) You are welcome for the eye candy!! :-)
DeleteOh wow thats A LOT of lip products!! :D I remember when I first started with makeup I thought it made no sense to spend money on lipsticks, and now I have a good quantity but not as many as you!! :D
