A challenge experienced by anyone with a burgeoning makeup collection is how and where to organize and store their stash. For some time I have been struggling to find a feasible solution, and continually revisit the idea of purchasing the IKEA Alex seen above. I know that it has long been a favorite among many beauty bloggers, but for some reason I just have never purchased it (and I have come close many times). One of my concerns is finding appropriate dividers, and not have to make them myself. While the Alex remains on my list, I still continue to search for other storage solutions. I have thought about something vintage- like a Mid-Century Modern piece, but I haven't found anything that has jumped out at me that doesn't cost an arm and a leg.
Where and how to you store your makeup? What are some of your best storage solutions?
I'm currently storing my currently used makeup in a large plastic box. Some of it is in my closet, being stored in the original shop bags they came in. I'm also looking for some sort of box to store my makeup in.
ReplyDeleteHi Iris,
DeleteIt's hard to find a suitable solution that allows one to keep everything in the same place, and with enough space for growth, and that is easy to organize (and access). Let me know if you find a suitable solution!!! :-)
I have something at home from Ikea and I think its furnitures are ok because they are inexpensive and quite light but for storaging I have a wood display from my mother's old shop in the bathroom.
ReplyDeleteIt looks more like a bookcase and we used it for books before.
It has 5 shelves and it's perfect because three women have loads of beauty and bath stuff ehehe
I think I need t buy some clear plastic boxes because products quickly collect dust on a shelf... anyway a small ex-bookcase is a fun idea for beauty products ;-)
I'm lucky, my furry friends haven't started shelf climbing yet XD
Have a great day
Ciao Valentina!!!!!!!! The bookcase is a great solution- particularly with clear plastic bins so that you can actually see your makeup. It could be a problem at my house since my furry friends are far less civilized than yours- mine like to climb everything. I have started closing my bathroom door to keep them out of there though!!
DeleteHave a lovely evening! xoxo
I'm bad, I store in my linen closet and store my linens in another drawer.
ReplyDeleteThat's a good location! Makeup always trumps linens in my world!! :D
DeleteThis is what I bought back in the summer and I LOVE it! DO IT!
ReplyDeleteDid you get this one or the taller version with more drawers? How do you organize the inside of the drawers, Christa? I really should just do it, but I want the interior drawers to be more structured with dividers. Have you found suitable storage bins to place inside of the drawers? My collection has become cumbersome in size, and my organization and storage is now sorely lacking! <3
Deletei always thought about getting the alex drawers but i'm scared to actually be allowed to have that much stuff to fill it! lol. i have 2 helmers, with some drawers with the antonius dividers (which i actually saw on a post on lipglossiping!) i keep most of my makeup in different desktop drawers (like for office supplies and things) and have these nice clear drawers from the container store that i love!
ReplyDeleteHI Joyce! I have looked at the Helmers along with the Antonius dividers as well- and almost bought them the last time I was at IKEA, but I was concerned about how many I would ultimately need. I need to do something though. I like your system. However at the rate that you and I are accumulating Burberry alone we will require additional storage quickly- LOL! Thanks for sharing- I will definitely give this more thought! :D
DeleteA woman after my own heart. I, too, want a midcentury vintage vanity. This is my dream one on my Pinterest. Unfortunately, Martha Stewart's daughter, Alexis, owns it, so I think I'm out of luck. But something similar...someday!

For now I have this Malm in black-brown from Ikea with clear bins of varying size from the container store.

Hi Lindsie, Thanks for stopping by! OMG that is an amazing vanity-- I would love to have that!!! Of course her budget is QUITE a bit bigger than mine! I like your Malm-- that's a great idea!!!
DeleteSorry if I post this twice, I had a little computer fritz. But I had to say, a woman after my own heart! I, too, pine for a mid-century modern vanity area. This is my dream one on my Pinterest. But, it is owned by Martha Stewart's daughter, Alexis, so I think I'm out of luck! http://pinterest.com/pin/77194581084036854/

I have the Alex for makeup storage, and it was a great choice for me. I found small, shallow plastic bins which fit in both drawer sizes (you can find them at drugstores or the Container Store) and have compartmentalized all my makeup and polishes, but for my palettes, which are stored in a couple of the drawers either stacked or lined up horizontally. For the top drawer I did something slightly different-- I found two Tupperware cutlery trays which fit perfectly side by side, and have all my cream shadows, eyeshadows and eyeliners organized by shade. On top I have a large apothecary-style glass vase I use as a brush holder (used the small plastic pebbles sold as doll stuffing so that the brushes can be arranged semi-artistically). Finished it off with a lamp and trays with my fragrances and kicknacks!
ReplyDeleteHi Marta,
DeleteThanks for sharing! Your whole storage concept is much more organized and well thought out than mine, by a long shot. I store most of my eyeshadows and blushes in two small drawers right above this big drawer, and it isn't nearly as efficient as I would like for it to be. I still may just cave and buy the Alex-- I love the clean lines, and it seems trouble free. Thanks for the tips on where to get storage for inside the drawers!! :-)
