MAC Hey, Sailor! Highlighting Powder in Crew- Review & Swatches

Source
Initially I walked away from the MAC Hey, Sailor! Collection- but eventually I decided to get Crew Highlight Powder before it was gone. I have become very selective when choosing anything from their limited edition collections- so I really took my sweet time deciding whether or not I was going to even get this piece at all.  The tipping point for me was seeing Reika's review at Front Row Beauty- she seldom ever purchases and blogs about MAC products anymore- so when I saw how beautiful it was on her,  and how much she loved it- I knew that I would regret passing it up. So I engaged in that very dangerous middle of the night activity, and ordered it online from Nordstrom (and yes, they are still available).

MAC Describes Crew as a "Soft peachy cream" highlighter with shimmer. First, I am not at all sure why MAC is marketing Crew as a highlighter when it is ostensibly a blush. The component that makes it a highlighter is the cream colored shade between the lavender, pink and orange shades- however, this is only an overspray- so once it is gone, so too is your ability to use it as a highlighter. What this is is a blush that is a lovely melange of the three colored stripes which, when blended equally, create a lovely neutral pink. What's more, you can tailor the color to meet your specific needs- if you prefer a cooler pink- either apply the orange light-handedly or avoid it altogether. If you prefer a warmer peachier hue then lean into that upper register. While the colors individually tend to be more pastel, the end result of swirling them together doesn't have to be. It is also important to note that this is no glitter-bomb-- instead it gives a nice healthy glow from within effect.
According to MAC, "Pearlized highlights in a superfine pressed powder. Goes on easily to create a smooth, sophisticated pop of light. Packaged in a jaunty nautical striped compact." Limited edition. What MAC detractors may be shocked to learn is the fact that this is a very finely milled and lusciously creamy powder- therefore it definitely ranks among the higher quality limited edition products from the dizzying frequency of MAC releases.

Overall assessment: This is awesome as a blush! I'm really happy that I bought it!
$29.00 where MAC is available. I got mine from Nordstrom.

  1. Pretty! Too bad it wouldn't be easier to use the separate colours.

    1. They definitely don't give you quite enough room to do that-- at least not with the sliver of lavender! The orange and pink are pretty easy to isolate though. :-)

  2. Oh no! I am literally KICKING myself for walking away from this one. I fell in love when I swatched it in the store but was fooled by the highlighting selling point - I thought it would have made a great blush too. Kudos to you for buying it. Enjoy :)

    1. Is there nowhere left in Australia that has a few left in stock? Reika was able to track it down a while after the launch-- so I bet you could probably still find one without having to resort to eBay. I really think that their marketing strategy was a total miss for this product. If I was looking for a highlighter I would have been mighty irritated to see my highlighter quickly become a blush after a few uses when the overspray wore away. :-)

  3. Are they meant to be used individually? They are pretty shades.

    1. Hi Kimberly! I suppose that you could use them individually, but I think that they are much easier to use swirled together. I only swatched the individual bands so that you could tell what each of the colors looked like before mixing them. It is really quite pretty! I'm really pleased with my purchase.

    1. Hi Eugenia! They are still available at Nordstrom online-- so it's not too late! Last time that I checked it was also still available at MAC online.

  5. If I were buying from this collection, I probably would have picked this one as well. :) Very pretty!

    1. I like it very much, but I do think that it was a marketing miss-- this really isn't a highlighter at all-- at least not once the very thin overspray wears away!
