Bliss Blood Orange + White Pepper Body Butter Review

I have had an unused brand new tube of Bliss Blood Orange+White Pepper Body Butter sitting in my stash for a while, and have only just recently gotten around to using it. I must preface this post by stating that it was a gift, and in all likelihood I would never have purchased it on my own. This is not to say that I don't like it, but in the spirit of full disclosure I feel obligated to tell you that this particular product really wasn't even on my radar of the things that I "needed" to try. With that said, I must admit that I like it. I'm often put off by body butters and lotions that are heavily fragranced, and I wasn't too sure about the scent of this one at first, but as it turns out the scent nearly disappears on me after a short period of time leaving only the faintest pleasant spicy blood orange smell.

What I am most interested in when it comes to body butters is their ability to well, moisturize. Frankly I often feel that fragrance impedes the ability to moisturize because that often means an excessive amount of alcohol present in the product. In the case of this Bliss Body Butter I feel that it really is a good moisturizer, and it has a rich and creamy texture that is neither greasy, nor too thick to work into the skin.

It is loaded with some good ingredients, and it is now Paraben free. However, if you are among the many people who avoid the silicone family in your beauty products then you will likely want to pass on this product since Dimethicone is quite high up on the list of ingredients. It also likely accounts for the marvelous slip that this product has which makes application so smooth and silky.

Bliss posits that this, Best-selling, luxuriously rich cream restores moisture to even the most rough and scaly skin and protects against free radicals. This cult-favorite, smoothing superstar is used in over 70,000 Bliss massages every year. It softens and hydrates skin without feeling greasy. Inspired by a delicious cocktail, this energizing fragrance blends bright blood orange and spicy white pepper top notes with nuances of coriander and white musk.

Key ingredients:
Coconut Oil: From the coconut palm, this is a hydrating, skin-softening moisturizer that makes the texture an ideal emollient for massage.
Sodium Hyaluronate: A naturally occurring humectant that attracts and binds moisture to the skin, scientifically shown to attract 1000x its weight in water.
Soybean Oil: Protects the skin barrier.
Antioxidant vitamins A and E: Protects skin from environmental damage, calms inflammation, and improves skin smoothness.

Ingredients: Water (Aqua), Cocos Nucifera Oil, Ethylhexyl Palmitate, Glycine Soja Oil, Butyrospermum Parkii, Glyceryl Stearate, Dimethicone, Stearic Acid, Isopropyl Myristate, Retinyl Palmitate, Sodium Hyaluronate, Algae Extract, Tocopherol, Arnica Montana Flower Extract, Calluna Vulgaris Extract, Fragrance (Parfum), Limonene, Hexyl Cinnamal, Linalool, Benzyl Alcohol, Citral, Cetyl Alcohol, PEG-40 Stearate, Trimethylolpropane Triisostearate, Sorbitan Tristearate, Phenoxyethanol, Butylene Glycol, Triethanolamine, Caprylyl Glycol, Tetrasodium EDTA, Carbomer, Ethyl Acetate, Cyclohexane, Propylene Glycol, Diethanolamine. Paraben Free.

Overall assessment: This is a silky smooth body butter that really does a great job of moisturizing the skin. At first I was concerned that I would smell like an orange tree or a glass of orange juice, but I am pleased to report that it mellows down to a very pleasant scent in no time at all. I don't think that I would necessarily purchase a replacement- not because I don't like it, but instead because I tend to be fickle about products like this. I generally tend to move on to the next thing when it comes to body products. I have, however, remained faithful to my Sunday Riley Juno Body Transformative Lipid Serum (reviewed here), and my Sunday Riley Disrobe Body Lotion (reviewed here).

  1. I like Bliss products and I do enjoy a subtle smell of citrus but pepper? Weird.

I'm glad they dropped the parabens. Bliss body butters used to score an 8+ on the EWG skindeep database. In fact, all were kind of nasty except for Pacifica (under 5, I think), which has a bazillion varieties, all of which smell like citrus!

    1. I like Bliss products too. The pepper just gives the citrus a little bit of oomph, but after a few minutes it just fades to a subtle citrus with a slight complexity. It is actually quite lovely. Next time you are near a counter try the tester.

Funny that you should mention EWG- because I checked the rating before posting the review and cringed that they had given this one a 9!!!! Of course their ingredient list was the old formula before they removed the parabens. Even so EWG would probably give this formula somewhere near an 8 because of the fragrance. They still don't seem to make a distinction between naturally and synthetically derived fragrances. I used to religiously consult them for everything until I realized that I wasn't going to give up a lot of products that they would surely give a horrific rating to!
