Excellent skincare begins with a high quality cleanser and exfoliator– not only do they serve to remove impurities and dead skin cells, but as a result they permit serums, beauty oils, lotions and creams to absorb faster, deeper and more efficiently. Furthermore, when cleansers and exfoliants do their job properly, one can use far less of their favorite potions and lotions, and therefore can save a lot of money on wasted product. Nowhere is this more evident than when one has to replace an ultra-expensive serum all too soon. Among the more recent launches from African Botanics is their Marula Baobab Clay Oxygenating Cleanser and Buchu Botanical Enzyme Polish, and both rank among my favorite go-to products for clean, exfoliated skin.
This luxurious, lightly lathering and water soluble cleanser, which has a silky clay/gel texture, is unlike any other cleanser in my current collection. It gently balances skin, without stripping it, and it expertly draws out impurities and unclogs congested pores. Furthermore, it calms irritated skin while reducing inflammation and redness.
The African Clay gently heals acne and blemishes without drying out or traumatizing the skin, and it effectively draws out impurities, and regulates sebum and oil production. It contains the essential oils of Sandalwood and Cedar that help to calm skin, while Jasmine blossoms serve to fade scars. The Green Rooibos Tea, which is a potent antioxidant, also serves to reduce redness and irritation and is known to help heal skin inflammation, and to help treat skin conditions such as eczema.
Skin is left visibly toned, even in texture, balanced and lifted, but it is neither left dry nor in the least bit taut. In fact, the antioxidant-rich formula leaves skin plumped and protected, while the rich African Botanicals, Marula Oil and vitamins hydrate and nourish the skin. Furthermore, skin is rendered remarkably smooth, soft as silk, and with a pronounced clarity and luminosity. It is also a fantastic treat to mix it with African Botanics Buchu Botanical Enzyme Polish for a light exfoliation.
This cleanser has a wonderful earthy fragrance that greatly enhances the sensory experience of using this beautiful cleanser that is formulated for all skin types.
Skincare Tip: Apply African Botanics Baobab Clay Oxygenating Cleanser and let it sit on the skin for about a minute to allow the clay to draw out the impurities more effectively. Then proceed to massaging in into the skin in a circular motion for about another minute.

African Botanics Buchu Botanical Enzyme Polish ($75.00 for 3.38 oz./100 ml. from African Botanics, Net-A-Porter, Credo Beauty, Need Supply Company and Cult Beauty £66.00):
Buchu Botanical Enzyme Polish is a very deep-cleansing facial exfoliator that effectively and efficiently sweeps away impurities and cleans out clogged pores. It is formulated with a combination of Marula Oil, Baobab Oils and Buchu Plant extracts that are punctuated by Micro-Algae and ultra-fine granules of ancient volcanic minerals. The fine granules, which densely populate this exfoliator, efficiently and effectively unclog pores, and remove dead skin cells, excess oils and impurities. Papaya and Pineapple enzymes help to dissolve dead skin cells, aid in cleaning out the pores, and make them appear reduced in size. Skin is left brightened, deeply cleansed and utterly glowing. In fact, the first time that I used it I noticed that it left my skin feeling as soft and silky smooth as ultra-fine velvet. Only the smallest amount is needed to achieve the desired results for the face, neck and décolleté, and the exfoliating particles are so efficient that you do not need to apply any pressure as you massage it into the skin. Buchu Botanical Enzyme Polish Skin neither strips the skin, nor does it deplete vital moisture or hydration. Dull, congested skin gives way to youthful, radiant skin that feels amazing to the touch.
Buchu Botanical Enzyme Polish has a wonderful earthy aroma that greatly enhances the sensory experience of using this exfoliator. While it is formulated for most skin types, people with sensitive skin should mix a very small amount with their favorite cleanser. I routinely mix it with Baobab Clay Oxygenating Cleanser when I only want light exfoliation, but I use it alone at least once or twice a week.
According to African Botanics,
A gentle facial polish that deeply exfoliates, lifts off dead skin cells and purifies the epidermis to leave skin immaculately clean, soft and radiant without causing irritation. A unique combination of sun dried aromatic Buchu plant and crushed Baobab fruit sourced from the southern tip of Africa are merged with healing Micro-Algae and fine granules of ancient volcanic minerals to visibly refine texture and soften the look of fine lines and dark spots by buffing away dull skin. Micro-Algae - extremely high in microelements, proteins, vitamins, mineral salts and amino acids to gently cleanse the skin, allowing greater permeability without depleting the protective lipid barrier.
Papaya and Pineapple enzymes clear the pores while minimizing their appearance and improving radiance. Rich in Marula, Kigelia Africana, Green Rooibos Tea, Honeybush and Aloe Ferox - powerful antioxidants renowned for their protective, regenerative and anti-aging properties to help smooth and plump skin. Stimulating and soothing essential oils of Bergamot, Rose Geranium and Tea Tree are blended to balance the secretion of sebum, detox skin, calm and comfort with anti-inflammatory properties.
Directions: 2-3 times a week. Apply a small amount as desired and massage in a gentle circular motion onto clean, wet face, neck and decollete. Leave on for 2-3 minutes to allow the enzymes to activate. Rinse thoroughly with warm water. For sensitive skin: mix a small amount with Baobab Clay Oxygenating Cleanser or with any other cleanser.
