Clarins UV Plus HP Ecran Multi-Protection SPF 40: Best Sunscreen EVER! Review & Swatches

Clarins UV Plus HP Ecran Multi-Protection SPF 40 is my all-time Holy Grail must-have, can't live without sunscreen, period end of subject. How is it that something as innocuous as a sunscreen could elicit such unadulterated affection and devotion, you ask? Well, it's rather simple. It feels wonderful, applies like a dream, plays well with makeup, and doesn't look or feel like a sunscreen. Perhaps most importantly it fits my criteria because it is a mineral rather than chemical sunscreen. The texture is soft, silky, and nothing short of divine. While the formula is quite concentrated I make sure to use enough to protect my entire face, neck and décolleté, and I never step outside without wearing it.

According to Clarins, "Face the day with triple protection! UV Plus shields from sun damage with 100% mineral filters. Defends against the elements with a patented anti-pollution complex. Fights free radicals and DNA damage deep within the skin’s surface with organic Cantaloupe — Clarins’ powerful new anti-oxidant from Provence. Invisible protection so sheer, it pairs perfectly with any moisturizer."

Skin Type: Normal, Dry, Combination, Oily
Blended
  • Cantaloupe Melon Extract - contains an exceptional concentration of super oxide dismutase, an antioxidative enzyme that neutralizes the harmful effects of free radicals on skin.
  • 100% Mineral UVA/UVB Filters – Guarantees high protection while respecting the skin
  • Plant Polymers – create an invisible "veil" on the skin, letting it breathe without leaving white traces.
  • Canteloupe melon organic cultivation
  • The Cantaloupe melon extract used by Clarins Laboratories comes from a non-hybrid, non-GM variety of melon from Provence which is particularly resistant to ageing compared to other classic varieties. It is obtained by organic farming.

Overall assessment: The best sunscreen that I have found to date! It's true love, and I cannot think of any reason to continue looking for my Holy Grail sunscreen because I have already found it.

  1. How does this compare to Sunday Riley's Cashmere SPF? That has been my holy grail thus far, but that price is a bit of a bummer!

    1. Hi Maya! Cashmere was my Holy Grail sunscreen for years, but once I tried the Clarins I was shocked that I much preferred it. The texture is lighter, silkier, has a higher SPF factor, and doesn't require any wait time before applying makeup. I never thought that I would like something more than Cashmere, but the moment I tried the Clarins I couldn't believe how much more I preferred it. It is also a fraction of the price which was the icing on the cake for me.

  2. I have the utmost respect for Clarins' skincare products, but unfortunately I'm allergic to alcohol, so it's a pass for me... Pity because on your hand it looks fairly light whereas most face sunscreens are heavy on my oily skin. Oh well, the search continues!
Thank you for including the ingredients list. Not many bloggers do so and I don't know why, there quite a few of us out there with sensitive skin that just won't "cooperate" with certain ingredients.

    1. Hi Mel, I agree, and I do think that Clarins is underrated these days with respect to their skincare line. Being allergic to alcohol really weeds out lots of things that you probably don't want to be using anyway, but I do imagine that it can be complicated at times given that alcohol is present in so many skincare and makeup items! It's a shame that they included alcohol in this sunscreen- because it really is quite lovely.

You are so welcome about my inclusion of the ingredients-- I did it for that very reason. There are so many people with allergies, sensitivities, or quite often an unwillingness to use particular ingredients-- so I always thing that it is important to know what is in what you are thinking about trying (or ultimately not trying).

      Have a lovely weekend!

  3. I'm just finishing my second bottle and I totally agree. This is great on my oily skin, does not leave any white cast, does not interfere with colour or texture of anything I put on top.

The one problem is that the printing in the older packaging was prone to smudging off; sometimes I was puzzled to find a red dot on my cheek hours later, only to realize it was a letter from the printing that had actually transferred to my face :D I wrapped the bottle in duct tape to fix that. I hope the new packaging has fixed that issue.

    1. Hi Patuxxa,

Isn't it an amazing sunscreen?! You are so right about it never leaving a white cast, and that it doesn't interfere with anything that goes on top. It is, without question, my very favorite sunscreen to date!

That is so annoying that the print wore off of the bottle and got onto your face!! I haven't had that happen yet and I have been using it every single day- so I wonder if they fixed that problem, or if it is yet to happen. I will definitely let you know if it starts!
